I need help with a couple of things. How do you attach the railing to a half newel, question one. How do I figure out the baluster spacing from the half newel to the newel and are the balusters attached to the railing with a 1" finish nail with glue? Thank you so much for any help.

I'm kind of partial to dual dowels and glue for the upper connection. And I like rosettes anyway.
Too many variables on your other two questions to give one definitive answer. At least for this guy.

To figure out the spacing, you just measure the space between the posts and divide by the number of balusters you want to use. They can't be more then 4" apart.
These balusters need to be securely fastened so they do not pop out. How you fasten them depends on the style you pick out and the railing choice.

That 4" apart is no place on that baluster to the next one can be 4" or greater. "Handrails on stairs must not allow a 4" sphere to pass through. (toddler's head) Be safe, G
