Hi all,

I am in the process of rebuilding some stairs that the "header" is split on.

Structurally it is super sketchy. On the right side there is a single joist that is notched over a block wall. On the left there was a double joist as that was the end foundation wall at some point. Single 2x8 heading the top of the stairs.

Here is what I am thinking I should do: Double up the joist on the right side and add a double joist hanger tied into the block using Tapcons. Doubling the 2x8.

Is there a simpler way to go or am I on the wrong track all together?

Thanks!

Stringer doesn't have to be doubled. 2x10 or 12 and can be reinforced with 2x4 along the bottom edge but never saw double 2x10 or 12 stringer. Probably because not needed. This is for average 8' ceiling spaces. The header can be reinforced with another 2x. Photo 2, cut 2x4? joist so you can slip 2x10/12 header and nail them together. Maybe double joist hanger you talk about is that? Notched floor joist should be repaired or supported. Esp photo 1 with cable hole which can start a split. I don't mean it will but it is not standard framing.

Edited the original with a (hopefully) clearer picture!
Usually, we can expect the footing to be right below the floor near the wall and engineers often have us add a 2x4 or 4x4 next to the wall to add support instead of inventing ways to use hangers.

To use a hanger you may want to fill the space above the concrete with a block to have something to nail the top of the hanger.

If you change or add to the ledger at the top of the stairs, will that mess with the flooring upstairs, or will that matter?
If the floor upstairs want to be saved we can talk about saving the one you have.

Brillant!

So, I should double up that 2x6 joist and a double 2x8 for the stairs header, right?
For the header we do a double, 2x10 and add a plywood to the face 3/4 thick and 12" high.
We do a rough framing with stairs, plywood risers and stringers that are covered with nice finish.

On a side note I see you have 2x2 on the bottom of the 2x6 joists, is that your work.
I have been in many discussions about that for years but have never seen it done.
The usual discussion is 2x4s on flat with lots of glue and screws to make it look more like the bottom cord of a TJI joist.

Not my work - I think it was done to fur the joists flat.
