So I have a flight of stairs in a house that are carpeted and if anything else can be installed other than carpet while still being non slip?

I've seen household flights of stairs that have laminate, vinyl, tile, but I am just not sure if that is code compliant or even that safe to begin with.

Any advise would be great.

Greg, that does make sense. That is one factor I appreciate about carpet, as there is the level of safety in terms of traction.

Could a linear stair tread co-extruded thermoplastic vinyl or rubber such as Mannington stair treads be used?

Below is more information on Mannnington stair treads.

I would use the tread like they used on Commercial and private planes for stairs and walkways. If you have a MRO where you live, that does work on private planes. They get so much overstock built up, that either the employees who want it, take it home, or it gets pitched into the dumpster.

Last time my wife cleared out a bunch of fabric, hides, ultra-leather, tread. Our van had somewhere in the $250k range sitting in the back.

Put what you want or looks good on your stairs and buy enough http://www.noslipstrip.com/products/no-slip-tapes to do each tread. I put down laminate and used this, in a pair of socks there is no feeling of danger or unease and it's not abrasive to your feet in any way.
I bought a whole roll and still have most of it left for other projects after doing my 12 stair treads in the house. It is truly a great product that is long lasting and looks nice as well.

Thank you for that link, as I've seen products similar to this before. 3M has a similar aerosol product, but the issue with these types of products is longevity.

According to the No Slip Strip website, these strips only last "an average of five years."

While I do appreciate your review of this product, being that I am the HO, ultimately I need to think long term. Thanks to the last owner, I had to correct a great deal of lackadaisical work.

I found out about it from a friend who's stairs I have been traveling up and down on the product for years and it still looks great. If I have to replace a strip or two in 5 years, well I still have most of a roll left to do it with. It appeals to me because I REALLY don't like carpeted stairs, after 5 years of heavy traffic the carpet doesn't fair too well.
We shall see how it does in the long run but I used alcohol to clean the area and also sealed all edges afterward with the sealer they sell which my friend didn't even go through that step. I'm actually going to trot up the stairs now for the first time this morning to check things out after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit us at around 2am this morning....I heard something fall up there!

Cwoods, amazing what can be learned by merely asking questions haha. Believe me, I am not a fan of carpet in general due to fact maintenance and the eventual need of having this professionally cleaned.

If had to guess, the existing carpet on the stairs is either 10-20 years old, but this has been cleaned and last HO mentioned he had this re stretched as well. Yes, some carpet can be comfortable and does have traction, but isn't something I'd purposely want to install except for stairs perhaps.

You are correct on removing the carpet. Not people friendly, when it gets that old and basically the backer is now dust, once you start pulling it up.

As for the stair tread, I could ship you some if I knew when my wife will be raiding the materials cage, before they toss what they do not want into the dumpster. I do not know what the ship costs would be, since you are probably talking at least 30#'s for the roll. They use the circle style, parallel lines from end to end, etc..

She has a roll of Coach fabric hidden up in the cage right now. Waiting to see what she will be doing with that.

Armstrong makes the Commercial style treads that go down on the steps.

Greg, thank you for the offer but I won't be doing any of this work for a while if not potentially in a few years. Not cheap to do this and shipping would probably be pretty high haha.
I am the same way when it comes to projects. It is nice having a large section downstairs in front of our washer & dryer. Makes it feel a lot better on your feet, then a cold concrete floor.

The joker that installed my Basement Stairs, must have forgot when end was supposed to be at the top and which was supposed to be at the bottom. It is like stepping off of a cliff for that first step. Just another project that has not been touched in the 13 years we have lived in this place. It may get done when we have the Kitchen done this Summer.
