I need to build a temporary stair from my old deck while I build my new one. From ground to top of deck is 106". Looked at a stair calculator but not sure what would be a good rise/step as it gives me multiple options. Any suggestions?

7" is the recommended for step height, so the 15 will be what I would go for, that way it conforms with all others, and your and others bodies are accustomed to that height , so why build something tricky to navigate, during the construction time.

That extra 1/2" is a hazard, are you sure that people won't be tripping on that?

As close to eight inches with out going passed 7 5/8 will keep you out of trouble. That is all they give you room for inside most houses. If you add 1 more riser you will run out of head room.

This is a deck, most probably outdoors, no ceiling to worry about.

But I see your reasoning, I know that I have tripped on many stairs going up, because they were not conforming to the 7 - 7 5/8 " margin.

Not just the ceiling to be concerned about. Sometimes the run may be limited by fences, landscaping, pools, structures etc. You need to have at least 36" after the stairs as a landing.

Most people find stairs close to 8" comfortable, all I am saying is once you start thinking about it, you will create a habit and when you take that inside, you loose. :wink2:

The stringer is the same length so should I go 7 1/16th or 7 9/16th?

This talking about it is why we never talk about it in front of a home owner, just build it to code.

You have to measure the height and redo the math at the measurement where it lands not just below the deck

If you are landing on a pad or landing often just a concrete step.

The stairs will land 130" or 140" from the deck but that is the end of the stairs so you would need landing at 135" or 125"
The pad you step on when leaving the stairs should be close to a tread around 11 inches with 36" of clear level in front of it or a 36" landing.

So it comes back to where are you going to land the stairs and the exact measurement height you have from there. If the deck or the landing pad are not level. Take the lowest at the landing pad and the highest at the deck.

Right now my stairs go to a retaining wall then you have steps from there. The retaining wall is coming out so I just have to build a temporary stairs to get down until the new deck is in. I can make the landing pad any distant and any height I need to. This are strictly temporary for a month. Between a 7 and 8 rise the stringer differs from 14.5ft to 15.5ft so a 16ft 2x12 no matter what. I can do ether a 7 1/16th or 7 9/16th.

So, what ever turns you on. :biggrin2: All this is starting one step down from the deck level, so consider how you will be attaching it to the deck .
