I am replacing carpeted stairs with oak treads. This goes down half of a story (split level, 7 stairs). Under the carpet are 2x10s that are chipped and look rough. One side of the staircase is exposed and there is a railing over that side that I am trying not to take off if at all possible.

My question - I need to replace the substairs... what should I use (plywood)? Or - if I'm using an oak tread, can I just mount the treads directly to the stringers? If this is an option, the stringers would be approx. 34" apart where the treads would he attach.

Thanks in advance!

Need some pictures.
Stringers never should have been that far apart.
Yes the new treads should be installed to the stringers.
Any access from under the stairs?

If I was doing this I would remove the old treads and risers, add another stringer in the middle, add 2 X 2 blocking glued and screwed in place and predrilled and counter sunk so the treads and risers could be attached from below.
Set the treads on the stringers set in constrution adhesive before screwing in place from below.
Treads need to over hang the risers and outside edges by 1" to 1-1/4".

I am not very experienced in carpentry but I am in the process of redoing my stairs now. Those stringers look pretty stout but 34" is a far span. Looks like you need to remove the current risers and treads and start over. Add a center stringer and redo your risers and treads.

I did laminate on my stairs so your application might be different but, I used 3/4" plywood for my risers. Then I took 1/4 birch and tacked it to the plywood for a nice surface to paint white. Glue and screw everything so you have no squeaks in the future.
You're going to want to take that railing off as well. You could probably make do with it on, but you will end up fighting it.

Thanks for all of the answers and the other link.

I have decided that in order to get them built up to code, I will be replacing the 2x10s. What would be the preferred replacement - 3/4" plywood or 1x10s?

3/4 ply or 3/4 plank boards so you can paint them and don't have to worry about facing the plywood. And you can use your oak treads directly on the stringers.

Not sure what you have under that carpet. Some numbers and pics with the carpet off would help
