I need to put a back on my kitchen island and part of the pantry.

The cabinets are cherry. The exposed sides are just laminate, faux cherry wood grain. (this is a cottage.)

What wood would color match well?

I needed an edge piece and found that the pine I purchased stained too dark. However the aged yellow pine in my scrap pile was a better match.

I could go 1/2 inch and that could set in the back of the exposed pantry between the edge and the card board back insert. I have edging in the cabinet color.

Or should I go thinner? A veneer?

any thoughts?

Alder used to be an inexpensive wood to stain to look like cherry. It has become popular now, especially the knotty variety, and isn't so inexpensive. The last I bought was still less than cherry, 'tho. Might be a good choice for the edge banding.

For the field or panels, what KC said.
