Squeaky Stairs Help

782 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Nealtw
Hi guys, first timer here. I've finally decided to do something about my stairs. They've been squeaking ever since i moved in. Almost every steps is doing it! Now since im real beginner here who doesn't know a dime of what he is doing, i need some real help here.

i'll post some pictures in the replies because im a first time poster

As you can see there are nails along the place where the treads and the risers meet. From what I've read so far, that is how i am supposed to fix the squeaking. However, since they are there already and so is the squeaking, and i dont want to tear out every treads and start from there, i have no idea what to do. Another thing is that i have no access to the under side of the stair since there is a bathroom there.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Your pictures are hard to get too.

See below go advanced, and then find manage attachments and jump the hoops from there.

Looks like your stairs are mortised stairs. Can you access the underside of the stairs?

When I replaced the carpet, the installer said it never works from above. You have to access bottom of stairs and install blocking. I don't have access to bottom, so I put in a bunch of screws. He was right.

Have you spent time figuring where the squeak is coming from.

I would look for any movement between the back of the tread and the riser.
Is there any crack between the tread and the riser below?

How much room is there at the bottom of the stairs, could they be extended 16 to 18 inches?
