My home has the old black coated wiring and I am wanting to put a light switch on an existing light. Can I splice into the existing wiring?

Once upon a time that wire possibly had some color to it. Is this knob and tube, or some other kind of system. Knob and tube is like this:

Need to know more to advise HOW to splice into existing. Short answer, yes but with many buts.

I have some of the "looms" around my house but I have yet to see any wiring going into any of them. I just have old black wire that has 2 wires for each connection. There is no ground wire.
