Receptacles go too far into box. Can steel washers be used to shim out a 1/8 -1/4"? Thanks.

Use an add-a-depth ring and nuts or washers behind it to secure it. Sometimes the ring is enough.

No. 1/8" -1/4". The box is for 3 receptacles. If the extender box goes past drywall? Existing metal box does the extender need to be metal or can it be plastic? Thanks.

They are available in both metal or plastic.

Arlington makes plastic ones. Look for BE1, BE2 and BE1R for round boxes. They can be ganged for larger boxes.
