I am considering buying a new townhouse but am concerned about hearing the neighbors next door. I inquired as to the soundproofing between the walls and got this answer from the sellers:
As for the shared-wall construction, the drawings indicate the following construction: 5/8” fire-rated gypsum board, 3” of batt insulation, 5/8” fire-rate gypsum board, 1” of air space (the divide between the two houses), 5/8” fire-rated gypsum board, 3” of batt insulation, 5/8” fire-rate gypsum board. The batting is fiberglass.
I don't know what this means in terms of noise insulation and was hoping someone could shed some light on this issue. I currently live in an older townhouse with a cinderblock divide with plaster on top. Unusually loud noises transfer but for the most part it is pretty quiet and I'm hoping to have equal if not better sound proof living if I move. Any help is appreciated!!
