You can not install ¾" solid direct over a slab. (I think catshot already knows that.) There are other methods which may work under the right conditions. But Canarywood is correct about following the manufacturer's directions if they recommend such an installation. What specific hardwood is it?

I would like to use unfinished ash, hickory .. possibly heartwood yellow pine. I saw on an episode of a "flipper" type program that solid (3/4" T&G hardwood) material was nailed to a subfloor that was placed on top of a poured concrete slab. What are the construction details of such a subfloor?

The problem with those types of shows.....it's all show and no go....

You never see 'after the fact'....nor do you get close up's of what they do. My wife and I get a laugh at some of the hoky things they do....'Design on a Dime" was one of them.

It's shows like that which keep guys like Holms in business.

I'd be going to plan B and installing engineered flooring and installing it as a floating floor.
Plywood should never be used as a sub floor over a grade level slab.

The only way to determine how to continue is to choose a specific wood and read what the manufacturer recommends for that particular flooring. But for some general info go here; http://viridianwood.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/NWFA-Installation-Guidelines.pdf

Pay particular attention to the chapters on preparation especially moisture testing. You must do all the tests and follow every step. But go find a manufacturer that has what you want and study their directions.
