Hello,
I just used Bher solid color deck stain and I'm wondering if I need to use a sealer now? Is there something I should use to finish/protect the stain? I noticed that when I move around the furniture it really leaves a drag mark on the stain. Thanks for any suggestions!

Solid stains are usually not recommended for horizontal surfaces like decks. Maybe someone makes them with needed urethane or epoxy reinforcement like porch and floor paint. I certainly would not trust a BEHR product.

You probably will not gain anything adding a layer. BEHR SS is notorious for poor adhesion even on vertical surfaces. Get what mileage you can out of it and use better and more appropriate products next time.

Agree fully with Sdsester. Get use and then strip, neutralize and refinish in about a year.

Have one with Cabots Acryllic done last year by a driveway sealcoat company that I now need to strip, neutralize and seal. There are large patches that disappeared over the winter months and other places where it is pealing. Customer admitted he should have known better than use a sealcoat company to do his deck. Biggest problem is it is Indian Corn Red. Red is the hardest color to strip.

I've never had any issue with Sikkens Rubbol products on a deck that didn't come from application error. People around here either don't prep correctly or apply it in areas that are too close to the ground with no ventilation or no way to seal the back of the surface.

Thanks for the replies. I know typically people don't recomend solid color stains at all but I have an older deck that was painted red then I replaced some rotten boards so I had a deck that was half red/half natural wood color. I tried stripping, pressure washing and sanding the red paint but man thats alot of work! So I had to use a solid color to cover up the two-tone deck. I'm hoping to get 2-3 years out of this solid stain (although Behr has a 5 year warrantee on the horizontal surfaces) then I'll just replace the whole deck and use a nice translucent stain.http://www.cabotstain.com/colors-and-finishes/families/Wood-Toner.html

Any chance you could buy yourself some time flipping the deck boards over?

solid stain on deck . i like it ,i use to pee around with toners ,semi transparent stains for years .then i said it and put a solid stain on, and then i said to my self,and this is true i really did. i wish i would have done it years ago:huh:

Have you ever worked worth RESTORE deck stain. Have you heard anything about this product and it's ability to last for years?

I am sort of forced retired from physical aspects of trade work but doing color consulting and helping out others with project bidding from time to time. I can refer you to some folks though and help you put together a request for quotations so everybody bids on the same thing. PM if interested. I will warn you I just moved back to the City 2 years ago so am not as up on who is doing things as others might be. I think I have a handle on some good subs but not a lot of GCs yet.

I would not use anything but an oil stain on walking surfaces. Latex just doesn't hold up. I should get some pics of the job I did on my girlfriends deck.
