i suppose it would depend on what is already in place for ventilation in your home, and if you have problems or not.

hmmm i don't think i have ventillation issues although i'm not sure how i could tell? right now the soffits are just made of the wood the house was built with so i want to put up aluminum!
the roof is properly ventillated though...

do you mean the outside fascia board? trim away!
the soffits are underneath, if you have holes under there into the attic, you need to add holed soffit, if not..... it's likely vented another way.

Intake Ventilation is typically way under utilized and is even more essential to the entire attic ventilation systems functionality than the exhaust ventilation is.
If you want to put up vented panels, then make sure that all of the original wood soffit is cut away to allow the vented panels free flowage of air.
If there are only rectangular or oval holes every so often, what good would a vented aliminum panel make?
I recommend 100% continuous vented soffit panels aong all of the eave overhangs and then swith to solid panels on the gable rake edge overhangs.

How do you know?
Based on what information?
All ventilation specifications need to be calculated individually for every single structure.
The math must be calculated to determine how much Intake and Exhaust Ventilation will be required.
What are the dimensions of your roof?

cut holes or rip off
Don't mean to hijack this post, but i Have a related question.
I hired someone to remove rotted fascia, wrap everything, new gutters, etc.
I am also having holes drilled into my solid wood soffits and than ventilated panels installed.
Is this the wrong way to go? Should the wood soffits be completely removed?
