I've looked around but didn't see any similar repairs to this.. How difficult would this repair be for a handy novice? The rotten piece shown in the picture is a piece of siding that appears to be slid between two sections of the soffit and splitting the two different levels of the roof. What would be the proper procedure for pulling this all apart?

Whole lot of stuff needs to be removed to fix that one.
That short gutter, the fascia behind it, that 1 X 2 trim at the top, the short soffit, and there may be more that can be seen one that all comes down.
That's a shame, that damaged could of likely been prevented with a simple kick out flashing on the roof above that short gutter.
