I am planning the layout of a small orchard (2 apple trees, 1 pear and 2 cherries). I live in Iowa (zone 5) and know the type of trees I want, but am unsure of the kind of rootstock given the space I have.

I have a 30x40 ft space. I originally planned on getting two apples on BUD 118, which are large trees and standard pear and two cherries on gisela 6. I am contemplating on whether I should get a semi-dwarf apple on M7 instead since it will be smaller.

Here is the layout I was considering: Suggestions, Thoughts?

I have planted standard trees myself, but if you want apples quickly, I would suggest not a semi-dwarf, but a dwarf. So you might want to plant some dwarfs and your standard.

However, I have heard that from a production standpoint, the dwarfs outperform as well.
