Hello,

I recently installed a single bowl sink in the kitchen. Problem is, I no longer have room for a disposal with the current drain setup. Can someone tell me if there is somewhere that I can cut the pvc prior to the "Y" fixture to reduce it to one drain?

You are in trouble----those are all fittings and the only pipe is the one coming out of the wall---and it is to short to simply cut off and glue in a new fitting.

How handy are you?--That pipe can be removed from the wall using a 'Ram Bit'--

Interesting! I didn't even know this was an option! I think I could manage that, but where would I make the cut? Then I would drill it out to fit a male connection? Thanks for the help neighbor!

You will be cutting off the Y- fitting ---cut the little section of pipe between the wall T and the Y pipe-----

What is the length of the pipe (how much is exposed?) in the Y fitting to the fitting in the wall?

I think if i carefully cut with a hacksaw as close as i can to the "Y" connector, I can keep about a half an inch of the male side. Is that enough exposed to get a female piece to cement on? Worst case, I can try that and drill it out if it doesn't work right?

You might get lucky----you could try cutting through the Y-fitting and pry off the bits of flange--then file/sand the glued area --3/4" is needed to a good bond---

So I made the cut and I think I have enough of the pipe left to cement a piece on. Here is a picture. Let me know if you think otherwise. So, I would now just cement on a 2" male threaded piece and connect my p-trap to the disposal right? Also, does a single bowl need any additional venting? I was thinking about it and wondered if two bowls acts as a vent and if I would need to vent this drain since it is in a kitchen island. Thanks again!

Give it a try---I usually hang the disposer and add the P-trap before installing a fitting to the drain---then see if the P-trap will go straight in of need an angled fitting before the trap adapter.


it leaves you the option of adding an angled fitting if needed---

The vent should be in the wall. Put a finger in and if you feel a pipe going up, it is vented.

Just noticed you have an island sink. Are you on a slab or crawl/cellar?

Hello all,

I believe I got this done last night with your help! It seemed like there was plenty of PVC exposed to cement a fitting to and the p-trap connection was a piece of cake!

RJ - yes, the sink is in a kitchen island and the house is on a basement. I did not add any additional venting inside the cabinet and it seems to drain just fine.

You may have this venting set up. It is called a Siamese vent

Or someone may have buried an Air Admittance Valve AAV in the wall'

If you have a Siamese vent it should be obvious by the plumbing in the basement.

Your best bet is just to not even go with the garbage disposal its just more problems down the road
