Simple handrail questions

If I want to put a cheap pine handrail on a wall, but want it to sit about 5 or 6 inches away from the wall, are the larger, extended brackets out there? Or should I put wood on the wall and attach the brackets to the wood in order to make it extend farther away from the wall.

I hope that makes sense.

I’ll have to get going on it to see how it goes. I thought a plank of wood like deck planks could be attached to the studs. Then on top of the plank I could screw the handrail bracket on. I’m not sure what spacers are.
