Simple handrail questions

If I want to put a cheap pine handrail on a wall, but want it to sit about 5 or 6 inches away from the wall, are the larger, extended brackets out there? Or should I put wood on the wall and attach the brackets to the wood in order to make it extend farther away from the wall.

I hope that makes sense.

You may find that the extended brackets are more inclined to tear out unless they are well supported and anchored.
