Is not ideal, not a lot of holding power for the product in use.
I would prefer a 6 penny ring shank, for sofits we use a staple gun.
Staples seem to have more holding power to me, but leaves a bigger hole to caulk before paint ... but up high and looks fine from the ground.
For siding the 6 penny ring shank in my framing gun.
All that being said, I have used my finish gun with 2 1/2 nails many times for siding.
Gable ends on a gambrel roof and all 1x8 pine, was what nails were requested and held up fine.
I have used it for repairing patches in the siding you describe and it does hold.
Just not my first or second choice.
