No form of siding I've ever heard of is installed with finish nails.
Care to let us in on what type siding your trying to installed?
There's only a few dozen differant types.
I hired a contractor to build a room on to my house. He did a few things that I had to fix.
I noticed that he put the brown pressed board siding from home depot. Looks like wood.
4 foot by 8 foot sheets. He used 16 gauge 2 1/2 inch galvanized air gun nails to put on the siding.
I was wondering if that will hold. Should I re-nail the siding?
Is not ideal, not a lot of holding power for the product in use.
I would prefer a 6 penny ring shank, for sofits we use a staple gun.
Staples seem to have more holding power to me, but leaves a bigger hole to caulk before paint ... but up high and looks fine from the ground.
For siding the 6 penny ring shank in my framing gun.

All that being said, I have used my finish gun with 2 1/2 nails many times for siding.
Gable ends on a gambrel roof and all 1x8 pine, was what nails were requested and held up fine.
I have used it for repairing patches in the siding you describe and it does hold.
Just not my first or second choice.

find all of the studs in the wall and re nail the siding with 2 1/2" spiral siding nails every 16" or 24" apart in the field and 8 to 12" on the seams. Was wood sheathing added to the wall behind the siding ?
the only time a 16 gauge is acceptible for installing siding is with wood siding for underneath windows, doors and soffit when the final course is 2" or less and installed not only with the gun nails but with a bead of caulking to act as adhesive

the combination of wind and rain causes too much chance for movement and the siding coming off. you need nails with a full head on them
Wrong nails and wrong material for the siding in my opion.
Brings back memerys of the nightmares dealing with masonite siding.
Sounds like he took the cheap way out.

Does it happen to be Smart Side brand siding?

The fasteners required, spacing, max. wind speed, etc., all change per location; http://publicecodes.cyberregs.com/icod/irc/2009/icod_irc_2009_6_sec002_par005.htm
