I'm gathering the materials now to do my siding install, I think I have the layout like I want it, but want to verify that everything looks okay. My biggest concern is that I have found some threads on here talking about Hardie not warrantying 7" reveal blind-nailed lap siding, though I have read every install pdf on their website for my zone (HZ10) and cannot find anything that says this voids the warranty. I know they've updated the install instructions as of November 2012, but I don't remember them ever mentioning anything smaller than 8", and even then it was only a recommendation, requirements didn't start until you got to the 12" boards (iirc)

I made a sketchup drawing of my plan, it will be as such. New insulation (still deciding between Roxul and fiberglass) with 1/2"-5/8" construction grade plywood sheathing. Perforated radiant barrier as house wrap with 1"x2" furring strips to allow for 3/4" air space requirement for radiant barrier, while providing enough room for nailing butt joints. Finally, 8 1/4" HardiLap siding with 1 1/4" overlap, blind nailed with hot dipped galvanized 2" nails and strips of roofing felt at the butt joints.

yup.. it has to be a minimum of 8" off of grade.

as for face nailing the larger hardie, it has to because it can be pushed away from the wall if water gets behind it and freezes. also heavy winds can cause it to move which can cause it to crack where the blind nail is.. if this happens it falls off the wall

of course not, like I said, this was a quick (and rough) google sketchup drawing mostly to display the wall. I know 8" off grade and 2" off roof.

yeah, we don't have a problem with freezing water here in Houston. Its January and I have the A/C on. again, I can't find anything on the James Hardie website that says you have to face nail 7" reveal, in fact, they PREFER you to blind nail. I've read all the safety codes and otherwise and everything is pointing towards blind nailing as long as 16" OC studs (which I have).

And you won't... and I don't care what they say (or don't say)!

I don't do blind nail 7" exposure Hardie anymore if I have anything to say about it.

You can get your fingers under a full panel lap and just rip it off the wall with little effort.

If I'm selling you the job, I'll talk you into 6" or even better yet 5" exposure if you want it blind nailed.

kwiks right. locally no one uses the 7" hardie only 7" pine or cedar clapboard and when they do its face nailed . im in a martime environment that has both high winds and high humidity..
