I need to build/install a simple gable roof overhang for a 36" door. It needs to be more functional than decorative. The current exterior of the house is vinyl siding. I was curious about what special steps need to be taken to attach it to the house.

What do you mean by "special steps"? Some background on your level of knowledge and experience, and what you intend to do would give some good info for us to either confirm your methods or recommend changes.
