shut off valve

looking for water shut off valve in 25 year old house

Not sure what you are asking, if location, it is usually located close to the water meter or where the pipe enters the house. There are also shutoffs(sometimes logically located, sometimes not) near fixtures such as sinks or toilets.

If you are asking about types, it matters not what the old one is, new full throat ball vales should be the replacement.
Useful advice from experience:

Unless you have an emergency, don't experiment with shut off valves over a holiday period. If the valve hasn't been used for a long time, it could be frozen, the washer (if it has one) could be shot etc. You will pay a big premium to get a plumber over the 4th of July holiday if you are in the US.

I won't start plumbing projects except first thing in the morning. And when I could have the water turned off to house for several hours.
