Kind of confused but if the only thing between the water supply and the shower head is the valve and cartridge doesn't it have to be a flaw there? Or are you saying it is leaking water between the shower valve and the cutoffs?
I am guessing the replacement cartridge will fix this. Those things tend to crack in strange and mysterious places when dropped. I would never have taken the time to even try to rebuild one. And I am not a plumber! I just pay them handsomely and have put many of their kids through school over the years.
I just cannot stand the arrogant souls storming into my home (I don't mind them in those of my clients) lecturing me about faucet repairs I attempted myself and managed to "f" up. And of course I don't even have to pay them--much--for work on my place.
