I gained access to the shower valve and found it had 4 1/2" copper lines rather than 3. My replacement valve has 3 and confused about what the 4th one is for

finally found a site that identified the bottom line as the tub spout which there is none. Assuming purchased in a contractor pack and "roughed" the copper into the valve prior to installation in the wall and used a shower/tub valve for a shower only installation

someone at home depot suggested sheetrock as a good flame protection while sweating the lines back into the wall; said the paper will burn away but the gypsum works great as flame protection. Is this a true statement?

Yep......just peel the paper off one side.

Very common, just put a plug in the bottom post.

I would suggest a squirt bottle full of water wet the burnables prior to starting.
