I'm visiting family for thanksgiving and notices the shower we're using is 24" shower width (wall to curb) and about 27 wall to center of curb where the door is. It's 58" wide if that makes a difference.

I'm a bit confused as this is a newly built house so it's not old code. Is the code of 30 inches before the door goes in and to the outside of the curb? Is it once the door goes in from wall to door? Or is it to the start of curb? I thought the shower was actually ok as far as width goes but I just don't understand how it was allowed.

Any idea how it was allowed? I need to put a new one in as part of a basement reno and I'm width constrained so any new flexibility would be much helpful.

I don't know where you would find a base or unit smaller than 32x32 and I don't know current code minimums. I also sure would not do it unless I had absolutely no choice.

If I had to look for one that small I would try a mobile home parts supply company or perhaps an RV parts dealer.

That small sounds like the cruise ships where you have an affair with the curtain every time you take a shower.

It's a glass door and looks quite nice. I imagine their either custom made or cut down the shower pan to fit.

Er, perhaps? I didn't measure the door but the shower pan is definitely 24" (23.5 to be exact) from wall to curb, and 58" from wall to wall I the other dimension. I thought the 24 for the width of the shower pan was below code which is triggered the question.

which seems to state 30" minimum in both length and width of shower area.

I've seen it elsewhere stated as.... "Code Requirement: The minimum interior shower size is 30x30 inches or 900 square inches, in which a disc 30 inches in diameter must fit."

I'm presuming the 30 inch disc basically dictates that the 30" minimum in length and width on the shower pan, but this shower and my sisters is throwing me off. I'd really prefer to be able to plan for 28 or so to the curb with 2 inches extra to be gained on the curb as it would make my planning work a lot easier without any heroics.

I swore that I saw a 30" clearance diameter is in our code up here as well but I cannot locate it now.

There are specs in the IRC, IBC and UPC codes, but the various states are free to adopt or ignore their recommendations. It's best to check with your local authority.

I always thought the idea was to have 28" of elbow room and have seen to 30x30 or 900 sq. in. spec.

While doing more research I found the California code which in part says the min. finished area is 1024 sq. in. and a 30" circle must fit within the shower space when measured above the threshold. Much more to it, so see your local building department.
