Hi to all, when building a custom shower base after building the preslope bed and laying in a plastic liner of 15 mil poly, what bonds the tile thinset to the plastic liner or is it sort of floating ? Thanks to all who reply.

Thanks, I am following that link and methods used. So we are saying the liner should be rubber, thick poly won't work ? Does thinset stick to rubber ? vs the plastic makeup of Poly ? Or is it just floating on top. I live in small town BC Canada and don't have easy access to materials needed. I do have access to 15 mil poly that is designed for under concrete slab water barrier use. That was my reason for wanting to use it instead of Kerdi or other liners. I see the writer says that the thinset should be better than an inch thick at the drain. Thanks again.

I know you said you're following that link and method, but we know you're not doing that yet. :whistling2:

The shower membrane used in a traditional method is 40 mils, not 15mil poly and is sitting on a pre-slope, with another 1 1/2" or thicker deck mud over it which will be the base for the tiles. Or you could go with surface membrane like Kerdi. The way you described your intentions it seems you'd like to do a method similar to the Kerdi, but you have the wrong products.

Go back and study, then come back. For what it's worth I recommend doing a Kerdi shower with Kerdi drain etc.
