Is this drain the right thing to use here? Just screw it in? Seems a little small, but it's the only one I saw on the shelf. And what is that strainer for? The packaging says it should fit here... But I don't see how that's possible without cutting it. What would I cut it with?

The drain grid screws into existing holes molded into the portion connected to the shower pan. DONT DRILL NEW HOLES. I can’t see holes in the picture. I’m assuming they’re under the tape. If not, there might be a style that pops in like a garb disposal plug. Might be a proprietary product…maybe. The strainer just sits on top loose to stop hair.
