Eight years ago we replaced our single handle shower control. DH insisted on one with a ceramic handle. I could find only two, one very expensive, one real cheap. Of course we went with the cheap one. :wallbash: I know, I know! Lesson learned!

Now I'm having trouble with it. When I turn it to the right to turn it off, it will turn past the point where the water stops, and starts to come on again. I don't remember the brand, but I do know it was not one of the big names.

Is this something that can be fixed, or is it time for another replacement?

Would a pic of the inside help? It will take me a day or two until I can get it opened up.

Would have to see a picture like you said of it taken apart.

Couple things that it could be; The nut under the handle has become loose enough causing the handle to rise above the stop. Lets hope that's what it is. Or the stop is broken. Will know more once you take it apart and post a pic. thanks.

OK. I took the trim off and the little green piece sitting on the tub spout fell out. I take it that is the stop?

Which leads to two newbie questions.
1) How the heck do I get that out?
2)And do I need to shut the water off? Not a major problem, but the shut off also controls the kitchen.

Yes, definitely looks like something broke.

Yes, you will need to shut the water off first to remove the cartdrige. Looks like you have isolation brass stops on each side of the valve to shut the water off. Turn clock wise with a flat tip screwdriver until they stop then turn on valve to verify no water comes out.

It looks like there is a retainer clip on the cartdrige, you will need to remove that first. Sometimes a flat tip screwdriver or needlenose pliers work.

I am not familiar with that design---

Just for your information--the screws to the right and left are water shut off valves(clock wise to stop-counter clockwise to flow)

One of the plumbers will be best to guide you---my guess is the outer big silver nut will free up the cartridge---

yep the stop broke...as mentioned shut off the internal stops on the right and left... then check to make sure the water is off to unit....remove big nut and you should be able to remove cartridge... be sure you look at how it comes out ...so you can install the new one correctly...
