Ok I live in a house that is 66 years old and I am ready to totally gut my bathroom. The floors the walls EVERYTHING IS GOING. I was just reading another thread on here about tiling a kitchen floor and it scared the crap out of me. So I went to home depot and I looked at the vinyl tile and groutable vinyl tile and its not really less expensive then ceramic tile but I am sure that its MUCH easier to install. Do you think people armed with the know how should attempt to tile a floor? I dont want to have to hire a professional tile setter. Do you have any tips on cutting circular holes in ceramic tile for gas lines and water lines. I think the more info I can get the better off I will be when I go to start the project. I know what is under the existing vinyl tile and its hardwood but whats under that I do not know. I am a DIY girl on a DIY budget.

Tile is forever, vinyl definitely is not. If done yourself, tile can be inexpensive and design is limited only by your imagination. If you are gutting the bathroom, you can prep the floor for tile as you build the room back. Tile floors must be RIGID, usually a min. of 1 1/4(3/4 plywood, 1/2" backerboard, glued/screwed to the plywood, then tile. Wall tile in the shower/tub should be over backerboard, around the rest of the walls, greenboard is OK. There are some good DIY books in big box libraries. They can answer most of your how-to questions. If you know how, that does not mean you can do it. Some people should never touch a hammer/screwdriver.

i have a good friend like that.... he kills on lead guitar, but i don't trust him with a hammer! lol
i've had to fix more stuff for him that he "fixed" earlier.....

i was thinking out my new bathroom this morning and i think i've decided to go with one piece vinyl.
why? tiles are a bytch to install for me, and vinyl can last 20 years and more if not abused. i plan on keeping the floor area rectangle so it'll be simple to unscrew the baseboards and replace with new sheet.....

I am a pretty handy person so I think I might be able to tile. I have too thought about sheet vinyl but I really want the look of ether groutable vinyl tile or real tile. Has anyone ever used groutable vinyl tile? I think I am going to do some more research on how to tile floors. I am such a visual learner though.
