Hello, I have a question about our kitchen.
Our existing base cabinets were installed directly to the floor with tiles installed around the cabinets. EXCEPT under the fridge, range and dishwasher. We are relocating our fridge and range and will be putting base cabinets where they were. This makes a problem because there are tiles there and if we put cabinets over the tiles the height will not match and we will either have to rip out the tile or cut the height of the cabinets to match the existing cabinets. My question is which would be easier and would you recommend? Personally I think cutting the bottom of the cabinets seem easier but then having to level everything perfectly in 1 cut makes me very nervous vs if I rip the tiles out I can just put the cabinets as is? Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you in advance! :smile:

I don't like either option.

If your cabinets are buried one inch to low--I suggest you add one inch of wood to the top of the existing cabinets---bringing the old back to 34 1/2" high.

How can you get a dishwasher into such a short opening?

If you must do as you were planning --cut the new cabinets---removing ceramic tile and backer board often damages surrounding tiles.

Thank you for the reply. We will not be moving the dishwasher so there is no problem there although it does slide in and out very easily so I'm not sure what the builder's did under the cabinets? We have not started anything yet but just planning the layout and how we would go about. I guess the best option would be to cut the cabinets. We are only putting in 2 cabinets and taking out 2 cabinets to switch the layout and it would be too much to have to take out the countertops and put wood tops on all the other cabinets. We won't be touching the other cabinets/sinks etc. Thank you very much!

--removing ceramic tile and backer board often damages surrounding tiles.

i had to remove some tile on backer board, while leaving the rest of it for use.
i put a diamond blade in my circular saw, set height, and cut away. it was messy, but it cut easily, made a clean cut, and did not damage any of the tiles i did not want damaged. just say'n

I would cut the bottom of the cabinet - the toe kick part. You don't level the cabinets with exact cuts. Cuts are made, leveled with shims then toe kick board is put in to hide everything.

Personally, I'd attempt to cut out the tile with a diamond blade. I'd hate to screw up a cut on a brand new cabinet.
