I have lived in my house 3 years.

1/2 my chimney is taken up by the liner or pipe or whatever it is from my gas furnace and gas hot water heater.

The other half is taken up by my fireplace. I think I have had maybe 10 fires in the last 3 years, and by fire I mean I put one of those java logs in there and lit it.

What do you think?

If they are true java logs, then i would say no you don't need your chimney cleaned, that is if you know for a fact it was clean when you moved in.

Hmm... no clue how to tell if they are "real" java logs. Whole foods sells them by the case, they say "made with coffee grounds" on the box.

As far as when the last time it was cleaned was ... not sure. PO lived there for 30 years and she was a single lady, didn't strike me as the fireplace type based on the amount of dust and cobwebs I found in it. The pull chain for the flue is definitely newer and the flue opens and closes beautifully.

What dose your home owners insurance policy say about fireplaces?

I know the insurance companies I have delta with in the past have had the information written in the policy about what will or will not be covered if there is a fire caused from using the fire place.

Did you have the fireplace and all inspected before you started burning anything?

I good chimney sweep will inpsect and clean everthing, adjust dampers and make sure flues are working. From experience they are cheaper than either electrictians or plumbers and I think I have put a few chimney sweep kids through college too.

I know they are cheaper than a chimney fire. Those that worked for me over the years checked everything venting up through the roof. Some were masons and could do brick work on chimneys too. You never know what could be stuck?

If it were me, and I had any concerns, I would call in a chimney and fireplace expert. And chimney guys that worked for me would dress up in the hat and all to amuse the kids. I never got an electrician or plumber to dress up much.

Real java logs are the only ones made with coffee grounds that i know of,and emit 66% less creasote than wood,or so they claim.

and i would guess their name would be on them someplace

No, I'll just go ahead and admit it. Only person to ever look at it was the home inspector, he made sure the flue worked and didn't say much else about the fireplace other than "don't have big fires in here because it's a shallow fireplace".

I'll have to dig through my homeowners insurance to find out what it says about fireplaces I guess, I remember telling them I have one when I opened the policy, but I never read the fireplace section through.

I was talking to my mom on the phone the other day when their chimney sweep showed up and it just made me realize I never had one come by.
