I am wiring from the breaker to the first outlet, then to a second outlet, then up to first light, then a second light, then a third light and then to the switch. When the breaker is turned on, even though the switch is in the off position, the lights work; then when I flip the switch to "On", the breaker trips.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

You would need a 3 wire cable between the lights and switches instead of the 2 wire cable you have.

To be more specific, as Jim said, you need 14-3, if this is the size wire you are using, from the first fixture to the next two fixtures.
You will carry the black through all the fixtures without connection to anything. You will connect the red to the lights.
At the last fixture you will connect the white that goes to the switch to the black that was carried through.
You will connect the black coming from the switch to the red wire.
The white in the 14-3 will be carried through and connect to each light.
