I received a new HVAC system today and have inspected it for damage. I noticed that some of the fins/blades on the AC evaporator coil have been squashed. I've seen this before on window AC units - it only takes a thumb press to squash them. It seems like pretty minor damage and potentially something I could also fix with a knife.

My question is, would you request an exchange and get a new one shipped or would you just not worry about it?

If it's only the fins, and the tube is not damaged, personally, I would just try to straighten the fins with a plastic comb (I would not go anywhere near it with a knife, but I'm a little bit of a klutz).

You might try negotiating with the seller for a discount/rebate in lieu of returning it. It's unlikely they'd give you much; the damage is basically cosmetic and won't impair the function, but if you give them the impression that you're thinking of returning it, they might offer you something. OTOH, I ordered a condenser that had some fins mashed like that and the casing dented a little, and got it for about $300 less than the normal price, so who knows? They might be able to recoup the 'rebate' from the shipper.

Thanks, I'll see what they say. Unfortunately the furnace and the condenser were also damaged in transit, it's a real bummer. But the damage to the evaporator coil is internal and probably caused by the manufacturer, not the shipping carrier.

I just bought a scratch and dent unit that had less damage then that, it would be worth asking for a discount (I think mine was about $50 cheaper than the normal cost), spend a few minutes straightening it a little and it would work fine.
