I keep hearing roofers claiming their costs have increased due to drastic shingle price increases. I am not doubting them...but since i do not following shingle prices...exactly how much % wise have they increased since last year?? I got a few quotes last year but decided to do my reroof now. I changed a few minor items so i am not sure how much of the proce difference between last year is the changes cost, labor or shingle increases.

It depends from which month from one year ago that you are comparing to.

For a recent 18 month period, prices were rising at a ridiculous rate anywhere from 5% to 15 % at any one time and nearly tripled during that period.

What puzzles me, is that there are many brand new contractors working as roofers, but pricing some jobs at less than the actual material and labor costs from prior to that period.

I realize that those types of contractors will not remain in business, or that there is some potential financial misappropriation being deceivingly applied, because it makes no financial business sense to pursue business without some semblance of a profit motive.

If company reputation for long term quality and stability are important issues to you, no doubt the contractors who's prices are appearing at the higher tier levels are those that have some chance to continue to exist.

Shingles which cost in the low $30.00 per square range two years ago, now are hovering around the $80.00 per square range and sometimes higher.

Shingle material prices increased nearly 100% from December 2007 until December 2008. There was then another price increase in March of 2009, however we have not had a price increase on shingles since March 2009. On the average house this could easily be $1,000 increase in materials, if not more.

First quote was done in May 2008...updated quote was done in June 2009...Increase in price was about $950 more for a 21 Square 30 Year Dimensional Shingle quote...i was told last May that prices were increasing...but wasnt sure if $950 was a realistic increase over a year span for a 21 square roof

That seems about right.

It really depends on the brand and the style, because some have gone up way more than that in the same time period, while some of the ultra-high end ones did not go up as significantly, percentage wise.

It's sickening, but true. It was damned hard to keep up with all the changes. We were only able to give 15 day price locks on our quotes... and there are a number of customers such as yourself who waited a year and called for a re-price and now must feel insulted because they won't return our calls. I only hope they know I am not the price rapist, but the manufacturers are.
