I bought a storm door to replace the cheap one that was on the house and I used the hinge from the old door on my new door, but the door is crooked in the opening. Can I loosen the hinge screws and put shims on the opposite side to make the door more straight up and down in the opening or did I mess up by drilling the holes from the old hinge

Do what ever it takes to get it to have a decent reveal.

Playing cards make nice hinge shims.
