I am framing my first door.
I subtracted 3" from 61 1/4" and got 57 1/4".
So one kingstud is crooked.

I shimmed the jackstud with 1/2" plywood; 2 pieces at the top and one piece in the middle. Its flat and 90* to the floor. Looks good to me, but I obviously don't know anything. Will this work?

i would take it out and replace withe the proper cut sized piece of lumber, not shim because of a mistake.

That means your header is going to be short too. I agree with Greg. Take some pride in getting it right the first time. Level, plumb, square. If you are cutting corners here you may as well stop and hire someone to do it right. Your issues will only magnify the further down the road you go.

This issue probably wont magnify anything. I'd just rather do things right. I guess your place, you do it how you want it.

Get those eyes checked too or make sure you wear both shoes next time you frame. How did you not notice a stud 1" out of plumb?

Anytime you frame a doorway, you want the straightest lumber you can find.
You want to run your bottom plate all the way through to keep the studs in line.
You want to take the extra time to insure that they are perfectly plumb, level and square.
And of course you want correct size opening.
When all is secured and properly fastened, then cut out and remove the bottom plate.

When it is time to hang the door, you will thank yourself for taking the time and effort to do it right.
Get one thing out of whack, you will have to fight to get the door installed, and may never get it right.

You will quickly find out that things will go downhill after the first part. You just cannot create a bandaid and be done with it.

In the end, it will look like Billy & Joe Bob put together a house of cards, ready to fall.

I can picture it now.... He installs the door and turns the knob for the first time only to notice the door swinging open on its own. Now being serious I always tell people to measure twice and cut once. When dealing with 2 studs that need to have exact marks (either its for cutting same length or for headers, etc) I always lay the lumber face down, butt the ends, measure and mark the one board and use a combo square to draw the line on both. In my opinion thats better than measuring each board seperatly. To be honest with you though putting a block in there to bump it up an inch will not hurt anything. Everyone makes mistakes but just be glad this is rough framing. Do that with finish work and it wont be that easy to fix. Bottom line is take your time and measure twice.
