Hey Gang,
Thanks for such a great site to ask questions... and vent frustrations!

So I am residing a section of my home that is a covered porch with 3/4" pine panels 47"x23" (the sub wall is being layered to keep the moisture out, and to insulate, so these panels are mearly for looks) These panels will be raised out from the sub-siding via painted strapping.

This area is free from the Oregon rain, but obviously can not escape the moisture content in the air, and will occasionally be hosed down to wash off dust from our gravel road. This section of house gets a fair share of afternoon sunslight.

My question is, in order to deepen the wood grain, create a gloss, and most importantly, make the panels moisture wicking free!!

Is shellac my best option?

I am sorry if there is already a thread about this, I did try a quick search! Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Yup on spar varnish. Even Helmsman would probably do well in your protected area, but I'd go with Sikkens, Epifanes, or Interlux. Yeah, they're not cheap, but for this purpose you'll get a heck of a lot of years before any refinishing is needed.

Boy were you guys spot on with the sikkens! We just applied to our 400 sq ft mahogany decking that is to be laid down this week, what an amazing finish in a single coat!

After all this we have decided to paint our engineered pine panel siding, but are going to sikken the plywood subwall that will show through the 1/2" spacing between the planks.

Should turn out BEAUTIFUL! (so long as I stop blowing all my cuts!)

I'll try to share some pics once the deck, soffit & siding are up!

Thanks again all for the great tip!!

Oh, and on a side note... how would you handle this situation:

I send my girlfriend down to miller paint to pick the color of sickens, and have them set her up with everything needed to get the job done, all the proper dimensions that is... Well they send her home with a 5 gallon & a 1 gallon. I question her, and she could not emphasize enough how the guys there said you absolutely need this $240 worth of stain to accomplish that size decking... we stain all the decking last night, all 4 sides, and now we have almost 5 gallons left over.

My feeling is they saw a chance to WAY oversell my unkowing girlfriend. Should I go back and raise a stink? I can see missing the mark by a gallon or two, BUT 5!!

What would you do? Since we worked out of the 5 gallon first, and will eventually use it on other things, I am going to ask them for a little credit towards the pain we need.
