We are wanting to put in a permanent roof over our deck. We have had contractors come out and give us some bids and the lowest is about 10k. The space needing covered is 14’ wide x 16.5’ long. 11’ high at gutter and 7 or 8’ at edge of deck. After getting bids we are thinking of doing it ourselves with help from family and friends . Just wanted opinions on how it would be attached to the house. I was hoping we could get it in under the gutter by removing the soffit. Thanks for opinions and advice.

I'd remove the gutter, fascia and soffit and have the new rafters sit on top of the same wall as the upper roof.

Then run the new rafters at whatever pitch you decide and the gutter ends up at the end of the new roof.

The shingles just transition from one pitch to the other.

@kwikfishron - Sounds exactly what I had in my head. I got another free estimate today which was $15,400 for this to be done, which I'm sure is still worth it. He was going to do the exact same as you suggested. He gave me some structural details that I want to bounce off of you all for my own use in doing this project.

2 - 6X6X12 post set on 3 foot concrete pier footings, with 2 - 2x12 LVL sistered together for the support beam. 2x8 rafters on 16" centers, probably at least 18' long.

Does this sound correct, should I think about adding a 3rd post?

Also, could someone give me and idea (video, picture, drawing) of what the rafters would look like sitting on top of the wall at the house, notched out? some sort of bracket that would be used?

We have considered going that direction, just want something a little beefier. And we have struggled to find economical ideas to span the 16-17' to the edge of the deck. Thank you for the idea, it is definitely more economical than the $15,000 dollar bids we have gotten.

Jack trusses with extended tops are the way to go .
I have drawn in the house brown, the jack sits in the wall and runs into the roof further up.

The hip roof adds a like problem on that end you would add another angle in red creating another peak on that side.
