Are there any products I can use to clean out the main sewer line?

I know there are backflow devices available. What are the costs to have these installed??

Is there anything else I should look at?

call a plumber to snake out your sewer. Then have him run a camera in there to see what is going on. More than likely you have a partial stoppage in your building sewer line. Usually this is caused by tree roots but there are alson other reasons too. a camera will answer most of your questions. I would not suggest you renting a sewer machine and doing it yourself as if you are not sure what you are doing you could get seriously hurt.

I am not a big fan of back flow devices on sewer lines as most of the ones I have seen cause more problems than they solve. but that is just my opinion.

There is a big tree in the backyard, close to the house... I thought the tree roots might be the culpret.

one thing to consider, you said the tree is in the back yard, do you have city sewer or a septic system, makes a difference on what could be causing your problem, good luck.

I was thinking with city sewer, most likely your sewer pipe exists the house in the front, a tree in the back yard could but most likely not be the problem. I would stick with Al's idea to have some one come out and snake the line. You could do that yourself but unless you've done it before or have someone with you who has, you could get hurt.

It is possible that this might happen again, and having a handy cleanout will aid in the future. I say this, because I have had to snake mine twice for the same problem. The cause in my case is due to the contractor that built this neighborhood. For what ever reason (money, I'm sure) he had the sewer from my house and the neighbor's house come together and 'Y' into the city sewer line. This causes a blockage about every two years.

It is illegal here to have 2 houses on one sewer line. Everytime we run into one we are obligated to call the city and let them know. Needless to say we get cussed out quite a bit because the ho's have to pay to resolve the problem and the city will not take no for an answer. naby friendly neighbors were not so friendly after that
