Setting shower valve depth

I’m installing a new shower valve. I figured out where I want it installed.

I’m not sure how much of the valve body should protrude past the framing studs.

My finished wall will add 7/8”. 1/2” densheild, 5/16” tile and 1/8” thinset.

You see the grooves on the chrome part. Your wall finish should be somewhere in that groove area.

Should the finish wall end on the red or green arrow in the pic below.
