What are some key guidelines to follow when selecting a location for the main electric service box in a home so it meets code and passes inspection?

You need a location that is at least 30" wide unobstructed (the panel can go anywhere in the 30" it doesn't have to be centered) and at least 36" unobstructed in front of the panel to be able to stand and work on it and it can't be in a clothes closet. Others may have more info for you.
36 in front of the panel or 36 in front of your side clearance too?

One question I do have is in my little service closet. I don't have a ton of space. My panel has plenty of clearance but my water heater will be a little in front of my low volt media panel. You will be able to get the cover off with a stubby on one side. Any problem?
