I have added a large garage to my home. I currently have a 100 amp breaker panel and 100 amp meter base on the existing part, I have put a 200 amp meter combo on the far exterior (which is about 70') with a new 200 amp breaker panel back to back. I am putting a 100 amp breaker in the new 200 amp panel and running a service entrance cable from the existing 100 to the new 200 panel to this 100 amp breaker. My question is, what size service entry cable is needed to join these two panels that will supply the old 100 amp panel? Also, is aluminum safe or should I consider copper? All inside wiring is copper and this cable will be ran inside the garage. Some say if aluminum, it needs an inhibitor, some say that is only when connecting aluminum to copper, then I've read it can heat and be flamable. I am totally confused at this point.

If I understand this correctly you are installing a new 200 amp service and abadoning the 100 amp meter and refeeding the the original 100 amp panel.
for 100 amp feeder back to 100 amp panel you will need 1/0-1/0-1/0-2 Al SER for 100 amps. Aluminum service cables are perfectly safe when installed properly. Antioxidants are not required by code but is an issue determined by the wire manufacturers. We always use it anyway just to be safe.

The refed 100 amp panel will need the equipment grounds and neutrals isolated as it will no longer be the service equipment.

Brric, thank you for your reply, this is very helpful. Just one more question, if I decide to go copper will a 2-2-2-3 or a 2-2-2-4 work for this? Codes don't really apply where I am, but I want to be safe. Thanks

Again, thanks brric. Scubba_Dave, I only meant not any particular city code. Didn't mean to offend anyone. I totally understand what you are saying, and I do respect the "National" codes. New at this, and how things can be misunderstood, next time I will be more careful with how I word things. First time to ask a question on line, so please forgive me. If you use THHN/THWN copper conductors in a conduit, then all you would need is #3-3-4-8 for the 100 Amp feeder back to your original panel.
