Or, my mom.

Her microwave had the number pad go out, or something like that. Its an over-the-range model.

What's a good brand? She wants something good, mid-priced (supposedly), and available in white since that's what the other stuff in her place are.

Please and thank you.

Over the range ups the price a little bit. I have always been happy with GE. Microwaves have pretty well become a commodity item except for features. I can speak to all the features as I primarily use mine to reheat left overs, defrost and melt butter. I really don't like food cooked in a microwave. Only pay for the features you will use.

The Whirlpool models @ about the $200 price point seem to be a decent OTR model. White or black normally the same price at the blue or orange stores.

The scrolling menu prompts may be confusing to an elderly person but can mostly be ignored after setup.

If you ever used a 220v GE Advantium, you would use the microwave for WAY more than just warming stuff up.

But then again, a $1,400.00 microwave isn't in everyone's budget....

I have a Panasonic with Inverter drive. Its OK, but the one think I don't like about it is that you don't simply type in the time that you want it to run ---- you hit the "up" arrow and the time shows and increases. Takes a little longer than just typing the numbers, and for sure I will normally shoot right past my desired time, and then hit the "down" arrow to get it back to where I wanted to set it.
Actually, this microwave has a bunch of advanced features, and the instructions push you towards using the setting where the microwave decides when the food is cooked --- but I guess I am not a trusting person.

I'm gonna recommend a Whirlpool. We don't get to work on them too much. Parts are reasonable. Pretty good basic product. We work on a lot of GE units. My biggest problem with GE is not part availability, I can almost always find the part but part prices are higher than the other manufacturers.

Sounds like Whirlpool might be the way to go. We have an LG and it seems to be just fine, although I'm not all that particular about microwaves, as long as they cook popcorn.
