Selecting Sprinkler Wire

I am going to purchase some 18 gauge wire for my sprinkler system. I will have 10 zones with 3 different valve boxes. Do I need to selecting a multi-strand wire for the total valves ( 10+ 1 common wire) or can I select a strand number for the number of valves that will be at one location.

Example: Valve box 1 - 4 valves
Valve box 2 - 4 valves
Valve box 3 - 2 valves

Could I get by with running three paths of 5 stranded wire since the most valves that will be hooked up will be 4?

Thanks

Use 16 gauge and hook up as many as it takes, it's stepped down to low voltage.
