we are going to repaint our kitchen cabinets soon. a previous owner painted the old hinges and many are pretty beat up and some of the holes are stripped out.

this is the style of hinge on there now.

should i just put some dowels in the old stripped out holes with some wood glue?

not looking forward to this job since the kitchen has 25 doors in 8 different sizes.

the doors are in good physical shape, they just have been painted very poorly in the past.

You can most likely get away with just using wood filler. Even the stripped out holes shouldn't be much bigger than about 1/8" or so. And since you're painting them, the filler will be concealed well in the end. Just fill the holes, mush the stuff in really well with your finger or a putty knife, leave a little excess (ie don't push the stuff in flush with surface), after it dries, then sand it down flush. After the cabinets are repainted, you won't be able to notice the filled holes.

Not a fun job at all; quite tedious. But in the end they will look great.

If you are removing the hinges fill and sand the holes as mentioned then reattached the hinges approximately 1/4 " from previous location. This will give you "new wood" in which the screws can be set. As mentioned time consuming but easy and inexpensive.

An easier solution to drilling and gluing dowels is to just insert (tap) in wood toothpicks to fill the hole, and sand flat. You may not even have to sand if you nip them off the right length.

i would then use the same hole for the hinges? how well does that hold in the long run?
