I got a security system from a guy at work for free that im installing in my house. I plan on just pitting switches in all the windows and doors. The kind of switches i got, you drill like a quarter inch hole and they pop into the hole. Are these the right kind for the windows? Are vinyl windows able to have a hole in them without getting into the gas inside the window? Does it matter if i put these on the side or the bottom of the window? Seems like sticking a hole in the bottom of the frame would let water drip into the wall



anyone install these regularly?

The gas in your windows is between the glass window panes.
Google your security product and you should find on line info or instructions.
Depending on the type of windows you have the locates will be different. ie do they slide up or sideways or crank open, and what dirrection.
If you are drilling ino vinyl windows and drill in the wrong location you could hit internal ribbing in the PVC extrusion which forms the window framework. :thumbsup:

With some sensors, the magnet does not need to be in line with the switch for it to work. The magnet could be 90 degrees to the switch and it would work. You would need to test the type you have.

If you can install the magnet 90 degrees, then you may be able to glue the magnet to the underside of the window and not need to drill a hole for the magnet.

Or even bring the switch out of the hole in the bottom of the frame and glue it down horizontal. And glue magnet to underside of window. That is if there is enough extra space in there.

All windows are different and you need to improvise depending on the design of the window. Sometimes glue down. Sometimes screw down with a clamp. Sometimes both the magnet and sensor can be concealed. Other times not. Depends on the window.

Due to the secretive nature of the security industry, I doubt you will find any "how to books" on this, but there is a lot to it. Just use your imagination and test to see all the various positions the magnet can be in and still activate the switch. Like in straight line, parallel, 90 degrees, etc.
