screws or nails

2016 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  roadhouse
anyone have opinions on using screws or nails for flooring? by flooring i mean the sheeting directly on the joists. iv heard that the constuction adhesive does all the work and that coated nails are fine. some say ring shank nails, and some swear by screws. any advice or opinions are appreciated.
thanks,
john

For years I used a ring-shank nail, until the screw-shank nail came along. It actually turns 1-1/2 times (8d) as it goes in or out, not wrecking the wood fibers punching a hole as the ring-shank. I never went back as I had less squeaks. When you set the deck ply, let it down- not flop and drop. The glue bead flattens to 1-1/4+" wide, almost worthless. Start nailing from the center of sheet outwards while standing on it.(No air pockets) Be safe, G
