I finished coating this with Type S mortar not long after this photo was taken. But I didn't get the mortar 1/2'' thick and some of the lath was showing. I went ahead and scratched it, though, with a sharp-notched trowel. Do I still need to apply another coat or should I just apply my fake stone over this? Thanks

You should be fine just setting your Stone over your existing scratch coat.
