We are starting work on painting the house and have some questions. What is the best way to get rid of the chipping, and more importantly, painted over chips, as seen in the pictures below. If you see how the neighboring blue house has nice smooth bricks, but my house has bricks where you can see the old paint layer painted over.

Any suggestions appreciated. I would imaging there should be an attachment I can get for some of my power tools that can be used to scrape/polish without scratching the surface of the bricks too much.

When paint peels in layers, that means it didn't adhere and it could mean cheap paint or possibly a dirty surface that wasn't cleaned or that the first layer of paint has chalked and made the top layes fail. I would power wash it first, then scrape any remaining loose paint and then determine if the surfaces where the paint was peeled is sound or not.

Yea, best way is to power wash with 3,000 psi or higher using an osculating tip. hand tool the rest.

Pretty hard on the brick and mortar I would think.

sandblasting would work great if you want to spend up to $4 per square foot. if the mortar is in bad shape it can damage it but if it is sound you should be fine.

If you blast it I would recommend not painting it again.
