Rusty water coming from shower

We have a rental unit and when you turn the shower on, the water is a rusty color for about 7 seconds. What could this be from? They are doing work way down the road, but they haven't shut the water off. HELP!!!

if it is on both hot and cold it is the city banging the pipes down the street,if it is only the hot water ...might want to flush the hot water heater

The piping from the shower valve to the down spout is more than likely causing the problem. Check to see if the pipe is galv or steel instead of brass or copper.

Thanks everyone. It was the galvanized nipple that goes from the tub spout to the water line. Thanks again!!
